Another successful week of theatre for young audiences by Pillow Fort Theatre in the North West Province. As part of the ASSITEJ SA National Tour, Pillow Fort Theatre’s ‘Just Here’ spent a week in Mafikeng (6th-11th November) performing to six creches, and working with artists in making work for very young children.
After each memorable performance, for many kids in the ECDs (creches aged 0-4 years), local artists were invited to participate in workshops facilitated by Pillow Fort Theatre’s Asanda Rilityana and Roshina Ratnam. The week-long Artists Workshops were hosted at the Methodist Church in Mahikeng town. ” In just two weeks more than 1000 children have experienced quality theatre for the first time in their lives because of this tour. Imagine how many young lives can be changed if it was rolled out to each rural area and township across the country” Tumi Moroeng – ASSITEJ SA
The skills and knowledge shared in the workshops have empowered local artists in creating more theatre for young audiences and better access to quality theatre programmes. ” the kids clapped for the puppetry which for us, as performers, is really huge because often when one does puppetry really well older audiences often take it for granted. So to get that kind of recognition from the very young is a huge accolade” Roshina Ratnam – Pillow Fort Theatre.
Kimberley will be next to experience this spell-bounding work.
Thanks to the Pillow Fort Theatre, local artists, ECD schools and ASSITEJ – SA for making the tour a success.
