Embracing the Energy of Youth: A Call to Listen, Play, and Be Inspired!
This July, the seventh month of the year, we find ourselves in a period often associated with luck and good fortune. The significance of the number seven cannot be overstated; it is frequently regarded as a symbol of prosperity and positive outcomes. This July, we stand at a crossroads filled with potential and promise, especially in the vibrant context of South Africa’s evolving democracy.
This year has been particularly remarkable, marked by a historic influx of young people into our national Parliament and provincial legislatures. For the first time, a significant number of young voices are being heard in these vital spaces of governance. This fresh energy and perspective are not just exciting—they are essential for the growth and dynamism of our young democracy.
Assitej South Africa welcomes this invigoration of youthful leadership in the country. It is often said that young people are misguided, overly energetic, and even delusional. However, in a world that frequently needs bold, brave, and unconventional thinking, these qualities are precisely what drive real change. It is in their seemingly impractical dreams and relentless energy that we find the seeds of innovation and progress.
It is time to restore our faith in young people. We must listen to them, understand their perspectives, and appreciate their ideas. July, following closely on the heels of Youth Month, provides a perfect opportunity for this. Every older person, every individual in a position of influence, is urged to take a moment to truly listen to young people. Hear what excites them, what concerns them, and what dreams they hold dear.
We have long dictated the agenda for young people, but now we must step back and allow their voices to take center stage. There is something profoundly inspiring in the naivety and idealism of youth—a reminder that sometimes we need to let go, relax, and embrace the playful spirit of life. By doing so, we not only support the younger generation but also reconnect with our own inner child, fostering a sense of play and enjoyment that enriches our lives.
Listening to young voices and engaging in play are two powerful actions we can take this month. These actions help us understand and learn from the youth, while also allowing our inner child to emerge, unsuppressed and heard. Let us be inspired by the boundless energy and creativity of young people. Let us learn to play, to dream, and to hope once again.
In conclusion, I encourage everyone to go out there and play. Listen to the young voices around you, understand them, and let their perspectives guide and inspire you. This July, let us celebrate the youthful spirit and embrace the potential it brings. Let’s play, enjoy, and be hopeful together.
